Virtual Panel Discussion: An Unflinching Look with Benjamin Dimmitt, Alexa Dilworth, Dr. Matt McCarthy, Susan Cerulean, and Dr. Alison Nordström
Virtual Panel Discussion: An Unflinching Look with Benjamin Dimmitt, Alexa Dilworth, Dr. Matt McCarthy, Susan Cerulean, and Dr. Alison Nordström
February 7, 2024 20:00 pm - 21:30 pm
The Griffin Museum is honored to have artist Benjamin Dimmitt and four of his contributors for a virtual panel discussion focused on the artist’s new book An Unflinching Look: Elegy for Wetlands.
Photographer Benjamin Dimmitt grew up in West Central Florida, and loved experiencing the nature and wildlife indigenous to his home. In 1977, he drove to Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge with his camera, and that trip was the start of a project that would span decades of making black-and-white photographs of a natural treasure that, as years passed, continued to change, and not for the better. The once flowing crystal clear river is now unnaturally slow and murky. The hardwood forests, brackish swamps and bays, are barely recognizable. Through this long-term project, An Unflinching Look, the artist documents the damage wrought by a compromised aquifer, chemical pollution and saltwater intrusion made worse by rising seas. The work is both haunting and beautiful.
For this panel discussion, Benjamin will be joined by four of his collaborators for the book, writer and editor, Alexa Dillworth, Research Associate Scientist, Dr. Matt McCarthy, writer, naturalist and advocate Susan Cerulean, and independent scholar, writer and curator specializing in photographs, Alison Nordström, PhD.

Oglethorpe Day Special Guest Speaker: Michael Thurmond
Oglethorpe Day Special Guest Speaker: Michael Thurmond
February 14, 2024 14:15 pm - 15:15 pm
Oglethorpe University, 4484 Peachtree Rd NE, Brookhaven, GA 30319, USA
Oglethorpe Day honors our university’s namesake, James Edward Oglethorpe. Held in February, Oglethorpe Day commemorates the anniversary of General Oglethorpe’s arrival in the new world in Savannah, Ga.
Each year the festivities begin with the exciting Petrels of Fire race. Modeled after a race in the movie Chariots of Fire, a select group of Oglethorpe students runners circle the quad in hopes of making a full lap before the carillon bells’ twelfth and final chime. This amazing feat has only been accomplished one time!
Oglethorpe Day 2013 (1)Then the crowd, traditionally led by a bagpiper, processes to the Conant Performing Arts Center and the festivities close with a reception.

Book Talk: Benjamin Dimmitt in conversation with Susan Cerulean w/ An Unflinching Look: Elegy for Wetlands
February 22, 2024 19:30 pm - 20:30 pm
Midtown Reader, 1123 Thomasville Rd, Tallahassee, FL 32303, USA
Don’t miss out on Benjamin Dimmitt in conversation with Susan Cerulean for his latest release, An Unflinching Look: Elegy for Wetlands!
An Unflinching Look is an examination of a unique North American ecosystem in decline, investigated through eighty-five duotone photographs, scientific analysis, and critical interpretation. The project’s focus is the area of the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge on Florida’s Gulf Coast and the history and fate of its wetlands.
Dimmitt began photographing in the salt-damaged sawgrass savannas and spring creeks there as a way of examining and reckoning with the ecosystem loss and of understanding what was becoming of his native Florida. He narrowed his focus to a small, remote area that he knows well and loves. Dimmitt’s intention in bearing witness to this loss has been to portray the ruined landscape with respect and beauty. To document the progress of the saltwater intrusion, Dimmitt has rephotographed landscapes that he first photographed more than forty years ago. His photographs reveal the impact of several factors that are causing the loss of an entire ecosystem: rising sea levels caused by global warming, excessive pumping from the underground aquifer, and the contamination of limited natural resources.
